What is Photonics?

Photonics is a branch of physics and optics that focuses on the study and application of light (photons). Photonics encompasses the generation, manipulation, and detection of light, typically in the form of lasers, optics, and optical fibers. The term "photonics" gained popularity in the 1980s when it became widely used with the adoption of fiber-optic data transmission by telecommunications network operators, which was made possible by the availability of semiconductor lasers and detectors. Photonics has a wide range of applications, including data transmission, laser technology, medical sensing and imaging, environmental sensing, optical computing, and more. It plays a crucial role in various industries, enabling technologies such as fiber optics, laser surgery, and high-speed data transfer, computation, and communication. Photonics continues to advance, and the advent of Silicon Photonics (the integration of electronic transistors and optical components in one process on semiconductor wafers) in recent history has already brought production costs down and will enable new applications in a variety of fields.
